Gundam 00: A wakening of the Trailblazer
19/09/2011

Gundam is easily one of my favourite anime franchises to date. While I'm not as up to date with it as I want to be, I do know enough that no other Gundam series to date has introduced an alien life-form. So when I first heard that Gundam 00 was going to attempt it, I naturally had my concerns as to whether they could pull it off. After having now watched the movie, I can honestly say that my concerns have been put to ease.

The execution of the alien plot in Trailblazer was brilliant. This movie had me fixated on the screen attempting to process every single frame, I loved it. They kinda reminded me of the Borg (Star Trek... Duh), at the beginning anyway. It's kind of difficult to discuss it without giving away any spoilers (which is a real dog-act, so I try not to), let's just say it was brilliantly executed and the introduction of the first alien spices in a Gundam series was a complete success.

As with every movie however, it can't be completely perfect. I did feel the ending was a little rushed. I do applaud the massive, intense, heart racing space battle though. And while diminishing any screen-time from it would be sacrilege, the conclusion of the movie did leave a few open questions. The possibility of a sequel however, probably not. At least not with the characters we've all come to know and love. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen an anime series put so much effort into drilling that point home. Weird. Anyway, aside from that, other small gripes like a lot of the Gundam's had a few changes that weren't explained, making a few of the ending scenes a bit hard to grasp on to. Unless you're an avid fan of science fiction, then you'll make do.

I will have to say though, the money spent on Trailblazer was well worth it. Honestly, I'll probably buy it as a present for a few other anime fans I know simply so I can have the pleasure of buying it again. Well that and it'd be a well received gift. But I digress. If you're a Gundam fan and you enjoyed the 00 series, you'll more than likely enjoy Trailblazer. Go give it a looking at.
